Window Seats in Norbiton

Planning window seats for a home in Norbiton? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light

What window seats cannot fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Radiator grilles
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

About our window seats in Norbiton

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, normally with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. For a home in Norbiton, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and go through the design. If you are living with a period room that needs furniture to suit it and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste, that’s what window seats are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. For a home in Norbiton, door styles are talked through at the design visit. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Storage in Norbiton homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Norbiton were built before 1919 (about 24%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. There are 10 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Norbiton. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Kingston upon Thames sets its own rules. Where a street in Norbiton is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

For families living near St Paul's CofE Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Canbury Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Norbiton is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 1 mile west of Kingston upon Thames. Wherever you are in Norbiton, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. Across Kingston upon Thames, we cover Norbiton.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

Drawers let you see everything at once. Children can usually manage drawers more easily than a heavy lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.

Lift-up lids

With a lift-up lid, the whole space beneath the seat opens up. It suits blankets, toys and things you don’t need every day. We make the lid to open and close cleanly.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Ask for a quote

Why bespoke in Norbiton?

Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why us?

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make window seats for homes in Norbiton?

Yes. Norbiton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

What is a window seat made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Is it time for window seats?

A quiet place to read is a common wish. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
