Walk-in wardrobes in Malden Rushett: what you get
A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, so we allow for it in the design. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are room for two wardrobes in one space and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Malden Rushett, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?
Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it than keeping a bed in it.
A few of the things people ask us to solve include:
- More space for clothes and shoes
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
- Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
- Shelves for shoes and bags
Close to Claygate Common? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
- You receive a written quote for the walk-in wardrobe.
- We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Plan shoe storage around what you own
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Measure how much long hanging you need
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
Store heavy things on lower shelves and spread the weight along the rails. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.
Plan any lighting with your electrician in good time. Wiring is their work, not ours, and the units can be designed around the lighting.
Fitted bedroom furniture in Malden Rushett
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Malden Rushett, with about 23% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Malden Rushett, Historic England’s list includes Rushett Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Malden Rushett fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
For a family home near Chessington Community College, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For a flat near Chessington South station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Is parking a problem for fitting in Malden Rushett?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Malden Rushett?
Yes, Malden Rushett is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
