Window seats in Morden: what you get

A window seat turns the light by a window into a place to sit. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. In Morden, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are no space for toys and games and a radiator under the window getting in the way.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Morden, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Note whether your window has working shutters
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit

We open each lid and drawer with you before we go. Any grille is checked so the radiator can still warm the room. That way, everything works as planned.

Do not block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the seat is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That helps on a well-used seat.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the seat a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

How we price window seats

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The overall size of the piece

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Your questions about window seats in Morden

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Morden?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near St Helier station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Window seats in Morden: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Morden were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 84%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 5%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Morden is partly covered by the Upper Morden Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in Morden, let us know during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Cannon Hill Common, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to St Helier station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Lawrence, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
