South Wimbledon Window Seats
In South Wimbledon, we design window seats around the room you actually have. Your window seat is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use
- Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
- A bay with no furniture that fits

Window seats in South Wimbledon: what you get
Bay windows are common in period homes, and they make a natural place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that are not quite straight. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so the seat follows the bay exactly. It’s the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. People normally come to us about a bay window that’s hard to furnish and a radiator that makes the space hard to use, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around South Wimbledon, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the window.
- We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.
Before we arrive
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Making use of awkward spaces in South Wimbledon
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Wimbledon were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Wimbledon include Church of St Winefride (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and Pelham High School (Grade II), less than half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 20% of households in the streets around South Wimbledon live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 1.6 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. For families living near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
- Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
- Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge picks up marks first.
Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, fill in our short enquiry form and describe what’s happening.
What it’s made from
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can match the woodwork around the window.
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there is a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It’s finished like the rest of the seat. The rest of the front can be drawers, doors or plain panels.
Your questions about window seats in South Wimbledon
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Wimbledon?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Is the cushion included with the window seat?
We do not supply cushions; we make the seat and you can have a cushion made. You’ll have the measurements to pass to a cushion maker. It leaves you to choose the fabric.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
- Fabric covers and cushions
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician

Pricing window seats in South Wimbledon
Several things affect the price:
- How big the furniture is
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- How you want to use the space
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
