Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Think about what you will store under the seat

Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is typically all it needs. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge picks up marks first.

Open and close lids with care, rather than letting them drop. That protects the hinges and the paint. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.

About our window seats in Wimbledon

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, usually with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. For a home in Wimbledon, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and go through the design. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are an empty bay that doesn’t get used and a child’s room that needs storage and seating.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so the design uses drawers, lids or shelves to bring things within reach. For a home in Wimbledon, what works depends on how deep and how tall the space is. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

FAQs: window seats in Wimbledon

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Wimbledon?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Window seats are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near Wimbledon station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

The problems window seats solve

Many people want a window seat for the storage beneath it. Under the seat there is room for blankets, toys, books and more. It adds storage without taking up more of the floor.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • No space for toys and games

If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mark's Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Fitted storage in Wimbledon

About 44% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wimbledon went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wimbledon include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and The Old Rectory House (Grade II*), under half a mile north. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Merton is no exception. Where a street in Wimbledon is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 1.1 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live near Cannizaro Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The gaps are kept even all along.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. It goes into the frame, the seat top and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
