Window seats for your home in Eastfields
When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Window seats in Eastfields
A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. In Eastfields, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Most enquiries start with no space for toys and games and a period room that needs furniture to suit it; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Eastfields, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Fitting day, step by step
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You get in touch and describe the window.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.
How to prepare
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Window seats for homes in Eastfields
In the streets around Eastfields, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Eastfields, Historic England’s list includes Eagle House (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Prospect House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Merton has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
If you live near Figge's Marsh, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your children go to St Mark's Church of England Academy or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a flat close to Mitcham Eastfields station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.
Your questions about window seats in Eastfields
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Eastfields?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you make window seats for homes in Eastfields?
Yes. Eastfields is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Do pictures help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
How we price window seats
Several things affect the price:
- How big the furniture is
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
What to send when you contact us
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for the frame, the seat and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
Pull-out drawers
A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Where there is a radiator, the drawers are planned around it. We agree the layout during the design visit.
