Shanklin Village Loft Storage
Thinking about loft storage in Shanklin Village? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- A loft room with too many jobs
- A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised

Loft storage in Shanklin Village
A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We’ll go through the options in Shanklin Village. If your home has nowhere to store bags and boxes and no wardrobe that fits under the slope, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Shanklin Village, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. It is useful to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.
- It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft, whether it’s a converted room or a boarded space.
- At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up, and discuss the design with you.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.

How it is made
Pull-out drawers
Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can act as a shelf. The design visit settles the mix.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
- Approval for structural changes
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it

Tips worth knowing
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
- Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Mention any parking rules on your street
When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.
Questions we are often asked
Do you make loft storage for homes in Shanklin Village?
Yes, we work across Sutton, Shanklin Village included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
My home in Shanklin Village is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Storage in Shanklin Village homes: local notes
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 38% of the housing in the streets around Shanklin Village, with about 29% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shanklin Village include Sutton Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St John (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Shanklin Village is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. If you live near Manor Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to Belmont station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
