Our fitted wardrobes across SM2

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Quotes in SM2

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SM2

Homes across SM2, Shanklin Village and Cheam included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. You choose the colour and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.

About 28% of the homes in SM2 went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 47% of households in SM2 live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early. 3 of the 3 places in SM2 with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

Homes across SM2 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Shanklin Village: Living in a block of flats near Belmont station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.6 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

How we price fitted wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room as it goes on. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

For some, it’s about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use

Before and after fitting day

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Don’t pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes.

Questions from SM2

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Is the furniture made to order?

We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
