Alcove units in Brondesbury Park

Alcove units for homes in Brondesbury Park

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, depending on the look you want. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting so the units feel part of the room. We agree these details at the design visit. If you’re living with walls too uneven for standard furniture and units that sit well with original features, that’s what alcove units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area like Brondesbury Park, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, panels and the faces you see. It is a sensible choice where an alcove sits against an external wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we usually scribe the sides and often the top too. It’s what makes a fitted unit look fitted.

Your questions about alcove units in Brondesbury Park

Does a conservation area in or near Brondesbury Park affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wembley Central station?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away, so we never box a vent in.

Should both alcoves have the same units?

It’s up to you. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but many people put a desk or a TV in one alcove and cupboards in the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

How fitting works for alcove units

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square. Then we go through the design together.
  3. You get a written quote for the units, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Why people ask for alcove units in Brondesbury Park

Others want a proper home for books, records or a TV. We can plan an alcove unit around exactly what you have, with shelf heights and depths to suit.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Units that sit well with original features
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Alcoves that aren’t square

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Living-room carpentry in Brondesbury Park: local notes

About 39% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Brondesbury Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Brondesbury Park. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 40% of households in the streets around Brondesbury Park live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If your children go to Park Lane Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Preston Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelving and cabinets can go in an alcove, and they’re typically cheaper. The trouble is typically the gaps: standard widths rarely match the recess, and uneven walls make every gap obvious. A bespoke alcove unit is made to your measurements and scribed to the plaster. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
