What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You tell us which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. Once you’re happy, the units are built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Alcove units in Sudbury Hill: what you get

Period alcoves are rarely square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, often all at once. Each unit is made at our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. People normally come to us about bare alcoves beside the fireplace and alcoves that aren’t square; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Sudbury Hill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan alcove units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Living-room storage in Sudbury Hill

About 53% of the homes in the streets around Sudbury Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 12% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Sudbury Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. About 53% of homes in the streets around Sudbury Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and alcove units are planned around both.

If your children go to Sudbury Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Common questions about alcove units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sudbury & Harrow Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Sudbury Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can the two alcove units be different?

It’s up to you. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but many people put a desk or a TV in one alcove and cupboards in the other. Shared details, such as the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

The fitting depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what to expect before we arrive.

What prompts alcove units in Sudbury Hill

Moving into a period house often prompts it. People who have just moved in want storage that suits the age of the house, and the alcoves are an obvious place to start. It’s also a good moment, before the room fills up.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house

If you live in a flat close to Sudbury & Harrow Road station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Alcoves vary in depth, and the chimney breast decides how far a unit can come out. Standard cabinets can stand proud of the breast or sit too far back. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want, flush with the chimney breast or set back from it. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
