Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Check whether there’s a vent in the chimney breast
- Have any damp looked at before the units are made
- Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
- Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
To clean painted units, a soft cloth that’s barely damp is enough. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, which can dull or mark the paint. Dry the surface afterwards.
Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Overloaded shelves are the main cause of sagging.
How we make alcove units for Cambridge Heath
Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting. These details are settled when we visit. Most enquiries start with toys and paperwork with no proper home and a place for a small desk, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Post-war houses often have a through lounge or a living room with a wide window at one end. Around Cambridge Heath, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, and alcove units can give a room like that a focus. Low cupboards with shelves over them can sit beside or below the window.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

What alcove units can’t fix
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
- Finding and fixing the cause of damp
- Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job

Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Cambridge Heath station?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Cambridge Heath?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. We plan the height and depth with you, with a route left for cables.
How do I get a quote?
It is easiest to use our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.
From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so let us know what applies during the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
- At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
- The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Getting a quote
To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
What affects the price in Cambridge Heath
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The internal fittings
- Parking near your home
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
What to send when you contact us
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Examples of the look you are after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, use our contact form.
Alcove units for homes in Cambridge Heath
In the streets around Cambridge Heath, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Cambridge Heath, 24 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Cambridge Heath typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the design visit.
If you live near Haggerston Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a period home close to St James-the-Less, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1 mile north. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf units can work in an alcove, and they usually cost less to buy. The trouble is usually the gaps: standard widths rarely match the recess, and uneven walls make every gap obvious. A bespoke unit is built to the alcove and scribed to follow the wall. Several standalone pieces of different sizes can make a plain room look busy, while one fitted run looks calm and uses the space better. It can be painted to suit the room.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
