Ask about fitted cupboards in Cambridge Heath

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, especially when it uses the full height of the room.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John on Bethnal Green, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Fitted cupboards for homes in Cambridge Heath

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. If you’re living with cupboards that suit a period house and a neat cupboard around the boiler, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A good share of the homes around Cambridge Heath were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Homes from that era tend to have simpler shapes than older houses, with fewer recesses, which means fitted cupboards can add storage that was never built in. The fixings are chosen for the wall, whether it is concrete, blockwork or brick.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

How we price fitted cupboards

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Starting with a design visit

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Cambridge Heath

Does a conservation area in or near Cambridge Heath affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Cambridge Heath station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood is a good fit. Span, depth and load all matter.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the cupboards match the surrounding woodwork and makes later touch-ups easy.
