The problems alcove units solve

Sometimes there are old units already, worn, badly fitted or the wrong size for how you live. Starting again lets you rethink the layout, from the doors to what goes inside.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
  • Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Everyday clutter left on show

The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 1.2 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Alcove units in Camden Town

We work across London, including Camden Town. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. After that we send a written quote; the units are then built in our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and bare alcoves beside the fireplace.

Most households around Camden Town live in purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to modern developments. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Alcove units are designed for whichever you have.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and takes up uneven floors. Its height can match the skirting board for a tidy finish.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it is ideal for shelves and the boxes behind the doors. Its layered edge can be painted or left to show.

What alcove units can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Scribed side panels

Your questions about alcove units in Camden Town

Do you make alcove units for homes in Camden Town?

Yes, Camden Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

I live near Camden Road station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What affects the price of alcove units?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

How do I get a quote?

Just get in touch through our contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

We don’t do electrical work. New or moved sockets are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the units around the sockets, with cut-outs where needed.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Living-room carpentry in Camden Town: local notes

In the streets around Camden Town, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 40%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Camden Town is within about a quarter of a mile of the Regent's Canal Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in Camden Town, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For families living near Our Lady Roman Catholic Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Living in a block of flats near Camden Road station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure each alcove and go through the layout with you.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
