Wall beds in Camden Town: what you get

Our wall beds are made for homes in Camden Town and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know in advance. If you’re living with storage built around a fold-down bed and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Camden Town, and in a flat, bedrooms rarely have space to spare. Fitted furniture can be planned floor to ceiling, so storage goes up rather than out. The furniture is built in sections that fit the route into the flat, and assembled once it is inside.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What prompts wall beds in Camden Town

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed

Near listed buildings like All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Camden Town, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

How we price wall beds

What you pay depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Approximate measurements of the space

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Questions from Camden Town

I live in a flat in Camden Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is Camden Town in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Camden, Camden Town included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.

How much space does a wall bed need?

That depends on the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, so we check it at the measuring visit.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Camden Town homes and wall beds

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Camden Town went up before 1919, and about 22% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The Regent's Canal Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Camden Town. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Camden Town is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a family home near Our Lady Roman Catholic Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For an older house near St Michael's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
