Alcove units in Euston, Camden

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on alcove units in Euston starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home, in the colour agreed with you. Treat the units gently while the paint cures fully.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. It can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy finish.

How we make alcove units for Euston

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. Most enquiries start with worn or badly fitted alcove units and a desk that tucks into an alcove, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Euston, so living rooms often double as dining rooms or home offices. Alcove units can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run. Fixings are matched to the wall, whether it is solid or plasterboard.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Alcove units in Euston: local notes

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Euston went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Euston is partly covered by the Bloomsbury Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 40% of homes in the area around Euston were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side, and alcove units are built to those exact widths.

If you live near Lewis Cubitt Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a family home near UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: alcove units are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room. It helps to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Advice

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. Standard cabinets can stand proud of the breast or sit too far back. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want, whether that is flush with the breast or a little shallower. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Pricing alcove units in Euston

What you pay depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

FAQs: alcove units in Euston

Can you make alcove units for a home in Euston?

Yes, we work across Camden, Euston included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Euston station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Should both alcoves have the same units?

It’s up to you. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, like the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

The problems alcove units solve

Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, so there are gaps at the sides and the top. A fitted unit fills the recess from wall to wall.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
  • A desk that tucks into an alcove

If you live in a flat close to London Euston station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
