Chadwell Heath Alcove Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on alcove units in Chadwell Heath starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
  • Bare alcoves beside the fireplace

Alcove units designed for your room

How we make alcove units for Chadwell Heath

We fit alcove units across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you are happy the units are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and a desk that tucks into an alcove.

Around Chadwell Heath, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for alcove units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even, factory-like surface. It works on simple doors and on more traditional ones.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing means trimming the edges on site so they follow the wall. This closes the gap between a straight unit and a bowed alcove.

How fitting works for alcove units

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Your questions about alcove units in Chadwell Heath

Can you make alcove units for a home in Chadwell Heath?

Yes. Chadwell Heath is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barking and Dagenham and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chadwell Heath station?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. We measure each alcove carefully during the design visit, then the units are built in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them, so there are no awkward gaps.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp. If there’s damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The units are built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, with birch plywood where it’s needed. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you’re renting or moving soon. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
