Alcove units designed for your room

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and talk through the design, including the paint finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
  4. We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

About our alcove units in Thames View Estate

One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you, and leave a route for cables to reach the sockets. We make alcove units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are space for a growing book collection and walls too uneven for standard furniture.

Around Thames View Estate, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where alcove units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Alcoves vary in depth, and the chimney breast decides how far a unit can come out. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

Thames View Estate homes and alcove units

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Thames View Estate, with about 31% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Thames View Estate, Historic England’s list includes Eastbury Manor House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Thames View Estate joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a flat close to Barking Riverside station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Mayesbrook Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Is it time for alcove units?

For some, it’s about books, records or a TV. We can plan an alcove unit around exactly what you have, with each shelf set to suit it.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Storage that suits a period room
  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Alcoves that are not square

For a family home near Thames View Infants, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Questions we are often asked

Do you make alcove units for homes in Thames View Estate?

Yes, we work across Barking and Dagenham, Thames View Estate included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking Riverside station?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. Each alcove is measured at the measuring visit, then the units are built in our workshop and scribed to the walls when we fit them.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

The time on site depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The units are built in our workshop first.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Thames View Estate?

Just send us a few details through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
  • Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store
  • Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, go gently with the new paintwork: lift things onto the shelves rather than sliding them, and do not scrub the surfaces.

Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.
