Fitted wardrobes in RM6: how it works

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, keeping rails at a height they can reach. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and dusty space on top of the wardrobe.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

How our quotes work

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Ask for a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes across RM6: local notes

Across RM6, from Goodmayes, Chadwell Heath and Aldborough Hatch outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it’s made of.

About 37% of the homes in RM6 went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Around a third of the homes in the RM6 postcode district (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 37% of households in the RM6 postcode district live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in RM6 are well within our area. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Chadwell Heath: The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 2.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Chadwell Heath station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there is usually a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there’s nowhere for dust to collect on top.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and it’s easy to refresh in future.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in RM6

An awkward room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Not enough hanging space

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in RM6

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It’s made in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It’s common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.
