Fitted wardrobes across RM7: what to expect

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. Most enquiries start with no space in front for doors to swing and wasted space beside the chimney breast; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

How our quotes work

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across RM7

Homes across RM7, Romford, Dagenham and Collier Row among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

The biggest shares of homes in the RM7 postcode district were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 45% of homes in RM7 date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in RM7 ahead of fitting day.

Rush Green: Hare Hall, about 2.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Close to Harrow Lodge Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.

What to check before you book

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Which boards do you build with?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

What if my bedroom floor is not level?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
