Fitted wardrobes in RM8: how it works
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are not enough hanging space and wasted space beside the chimney breast.
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- A written quote follows.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
- Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Every quote follows a design visit
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Fitted wardrobes across RM8: local notes
We make fitted wardrobes for homes across RM8, in Barking, Becontree and Goodmayes and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 40% of the housing in the RM8 postcode district, with about 25% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in RM8 (about 40%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 25% of homes in the RM8 postcode district were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.
Becontree Heath: For an older house near Hartley Brook Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Parsloes Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
How we price fitted wardrobes
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- How big the furniture is
- The internal fittings
- How square the room is
- The number of doors and drawers
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Getting in touch
These details help when you get in touch:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Approximate measurements of the space
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.
Honest limits
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
Questions from RM8
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Where is the furniture made?
Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in RM8?
Simply message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit.
