Dagenham Alcove Units
We make alcove units for homes in Dagenham, designed around the room you have. Your alcove unit is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
- Worn or badly fitted alcove units
Need alcove units in Dagenham?
Do you need alcove units in Dagenham?
A chimney breast without its fireplace can leave a wall that feels unfinished. Units on both sides frame the chimney breast and balance the room.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Space for a growing book collection
- Everyday clutter left on show
- Worn or badly fitted alcove units
- Alcoves that are not square
For families living near Village Infants' School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
What to check before you book
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Where they’ll park and unload
About our alcove units in Dagenham
We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen part by part. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. You can have a spray-painted finish from the workshop or a hand-painted one done on site, in a colour agreed with you. Most enquiries start with a place for a small desk and somewhere to keep books and records; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of alcove units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Dagenham, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF doesn’t have a grain to show through the paint, so a painted finish looks even and calm. We choose the moisture-resistant grade for fitted furniture.
Plinths and scribe strips
Most alcoves need scribing on both sides and sometimes at the top. It’s the difference between a unit that sits in the alcove and one that belongs there.
FAQs: alcove units in Dagenham
I live near Dagenham Dock station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Dagenham?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
It depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what to expect before we arrive.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you, with a route left for cables.
Can the two alcove units be different?
It’s entirely your choice. The two alcoves are often slightly different sizes, so each unit is made for its own recess. They can share a style while doing different things.
What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, and we find a time for the design visit.
- We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
- We build the units in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Starting with a design visit
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.
Advice
Before and after fitting day
People planning alcove units often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
- Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
- Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
- Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.
Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight and adjust a door before a small rub becomes a mark.
What alcove units can’t fix
Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:
- Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Finding and fixing the cause of damp
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Built-in living-room furniture in Dagenham
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Dagenham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 66%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Dagenham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Dagenham Village Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 66% of homes in the neighbourhood around Dagenham date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both.
If you live near Beam Valley Country Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a flat close to Dagenham Dock station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
