Alcove units in Castle Green

Many people choose cupboards at low level and shelves above them. Closed cupboards hide everyday clutter, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The cupboard top gives you a ledge for a lamp, a speaker or a plant. Heights are agreed with you to suit the room and your things. Typical reasons to get in touch are walls too uneven for standard furniture and units that sit well with original features; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Castle Green, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. Alcove units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

How we price alcove units

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Alcove units for homes in Castle Green

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Castle Green, with about 22% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Castle Green fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit. About 55% of homes in the area around Castle Green date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where alcove units go.

For families living near Jo Richardson Community School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Close to Mayesbrook Park? Alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Eastbury Manor House, about 1 mile west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store
  • Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Think about what you’ll store before we meet

Doors can settle a little once the units are in use. Hinges can normally be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units, as strong heat can mark paint over time.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the alcoves, and we arrange a design visit at a time that suits you.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions from Castle Green

Can you make alcove units for a home in Castle Green?

Yes, Castle Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Castle Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice. We agree the height at the measuring visit.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp. If there is damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

A bespoke unit takes longer to arrive than something from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. What you get is a unit planned for your alcove, not the nearest catalogue size. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
