Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Let us know about access early

Make a note of the paint colour used for future touch-ups. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

Put coasters under anything that holds water. Wipe up spills straight away.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Church End

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. Most enquiries start with shelving that frames a window and bowing shelves in an old bookcase; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Church End date from then. Full-height built-in bookshelves can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

Built-in living-room furniture in Church End

In the neighbourhood around Church End, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Church End include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Church of St Matthew (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Brent included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Church End, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

For a family home near St Mary's CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Roundwood Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. Living in a block of flats near Harlesden station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and strong, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Church End

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Church End?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My home in Church End is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

What materials do you use?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.
