Alcove units for your home in Cowley
Alcove units for homes in Cowley
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting. These details are settled when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelving for books and records and a desk that tucks into an alcove; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms vary a lot in shape. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. The design for your home in Cowley starts from its own walls, with shelves sized so they don’t sag.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
With a hand-painted finish, you see the colour in your own light. It also means any filling around scribed edges is painted in one go.
Birch plywood
We often use birch plywood for drawer boxes too. The edge can be painted or shown as a detail.
Alcove units for homes in Cowley
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Cowley were built since 2000 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Cowley, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Laurence (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Maygood's Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Purpose-built flats are more common around Cowley than across Hillingdon: about 45% of households, against about 26%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
If your children go to Cowley St Laurence CofE Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Living in a block of flats near West Drayton station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Ickenham Hall, about 2.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.
Cowley is within the London Borough of Hillingdon, about 5 miles north-east of Ruislip. We design and make alcove units for homes in Cowley and across Hillingdon, as part of our work in every London borough. Cowley is one of the places in Hillingdon where we make alcove units.
Every home in UB8, UB7 and UB10 is within our area for alcove units, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Our area takes in homes on streets like Iver Lane, High Road and The Avenue, along with the roads around them, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. We also cover the places around Cowley: Yiewsley (1 mile south-east), Hillingdon (2 miles north-east) and West Drayton (2 miles south). Other parts of Hillingdon we cover include Ruislip (5 miles north-east), Hayes (3 miles east), Yeading (4 miles east), Yiewsley (4 miles east), Ruislip Manor (4 miles north-east) and South Ruislip (4 miles north-east).

Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You tell us which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
- At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
- Once you are happy, the units are made in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Related advice
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. A bespoke unit can run up to the ceiling or finish just under the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Questions from Cowley
My home in Cowley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Drayton station?
Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you, with a route left for cables.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Pricing alcove units in Cowley
There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The width and height of the space
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Helping us understand the room
To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Examples of the look you are after
- Where you live, with the postcode
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
