Dagenham Dock Alcove Units
Thinking about alcove units in Dagenham Dock? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.
- Cupboards in keeping with an older house
- Everyday clutter left on show
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
Alcove units for your home in Dagenham Dock
Alcove units for homes in Dagenham Dock
An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It gives you a place to work without turning a room into an office. Desk height and depth are agreed with you. If you are living with tired cupboards in the alcoves and empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast, that is what alcove units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Whether your home in Dagenham Dock is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, alcove units start with the room you actually have. Older rooms bring uneven walls and picture rails, while newer ones bring plasterboard walls and boxed-in pipes. Each is measured, and the pieces are made to fit it.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Dagenham Dock homes and alcove units
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Dagenham Dock were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 91%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 7%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Terraced houses are home to about 45% of households in the streets around Dagenham Dock, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and alcove units are made to those widths. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Dagenham Dock joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For a flat near Dagenham Dock station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to St Peter's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
Dagenham Dock is about 2 miles north-west of Barking, part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. From period terraces to newer flats in Dagenham Dock, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Dagenham Dock is one of 11 places on our list for Barking and Dagenham.
In RM9, SE28 and IG11, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking near your home
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Helping us understand the room
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Examples of the look you’re after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
Questions we’re often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Dagenham Dock?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Dagenham Dock station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. Height and depth are agreed with you.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. It is best done before the units go in, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. We then plan cut-outs and cable gaps around them.
How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.
- You contact us with some details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
- We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
- You get a written quote for the units, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
