Planning fitted furniture in IG11?

How we make fitted wardrobes for IG11

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where that suits the room. There is no dusty gap on top and no awkward space at the ends. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in IG11, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a bedroom that never feels tidy and wasted space beside the chimney breast.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What affects the price in IG11

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Fitted wardrobes across IG11: local notes

Homes across IG11, Barking, East Ham and Loxford among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

About 28% of the homes in IG11 went up since 2000, and about 25% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. A quarter or more of the homes in IG11 (about 28%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Terraced houses are home to about 38% of households in the IG11 postcode district, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in IG11 are well within our area. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Barking: Eastbury Manor House, about 0.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a family home near Eastbury Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What it costs

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Empty the area where we’ll be working

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

Honest limits

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in IG11

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.
