That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. How we make built-in bookshelves for Dagenham Dock
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. For a home in Dagenham Dock, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelves packed two rows deep and shelves deep enough for large books.
Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. Whatever kind of home you have in Dagenham Dock, built-in bookshelves are planned around those first. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Dagenham Dock
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The number of doors and drawers
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Dagenham Dock
Is Dagenham Dock in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, Dagenham Dock is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Dagenham Dock?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job, and is best done before we fit.
Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a written quote once we have measured up.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
- The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
How to prepare
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Getting a quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Shelves that sag under books
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
If your home is one of the older houses near St Martin's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
