Fitted wardrobes across SE28: what to expect
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a room too narrow for hinged doors and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
How our quotes work
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- We work across all London boroughs
- 300+ projects completed
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted wardrobes across SE28: local notes
Homes across SE28, Plumstead, Thamesmead and Crossness among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.
In SE28, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 30% of households in SE28 live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture. About 46% of households in SE28 live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
Thamesmead: The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 2.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Abbey Wood station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Honest limits
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Building work to create a loft room
When is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light as it goes on. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.
Spray-painted finish
Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished, in the colour agreed with you. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start.

Questions from SE28
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Let us know if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.
