How we make fitted cupboards for Dagenham

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Dagenham, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

Meter and fuse board cupboards work best when they stay easy to open. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so they can be reached without a struggle.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They shape the design, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.

Dagenham homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 66% of the housing in the area around Dagenham, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Dagenham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Dagenham Village Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your children go to Village Infants' School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Near listed buildings like Church of St Peter and St Paul, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Dagenham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Rainham Hall, about 2 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Dagenham is within the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, about 3 miles west of Barking. Design visits and fitting in Dagenham can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. We cover places right across Barking and Dagenham.

Every address in RM10, RM9, RM13 and RM7 is covered for fitted cupboards, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Exeter Road, Plumtree Close and Rodwell Place, for fitted cupboards and any of our other fitted furniture. The B178 runs close to Dagenham; on busy main roads, unloading fitted cupboards takes a little planning. Questions from Dagenham

Is Dagenham in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. Dagenham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barking and Dagenham and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How we price fitted cupboards

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The overall size of the piece

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish that suits period homes. You choose the paint colour.

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you will store, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.
