Fitted wardrobes for your home in Dagenham

How we make fitted wardrobes for Dagenham

Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. People usually come to us about a room too narrow for hinged doors and too little room for clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Dagenham, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Dagenham

About 66% of the homes in the streets around Dagenham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Dagenham. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Barking and Dagenham are set locally. Depending on your street in Dagenham, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

If you live near Beam Valley Country Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a flat near Dagenham Dock station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like Church of St Peter and St Paul, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Dagenham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Why us?

  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

I live near Dagenham Dock station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Dagenham?

Yes. Dagenham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barking and Dagenham and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

We plan it with you at the measuring visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Before the design visit

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
