About fitted wardrobes in NW1W

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It is worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are no space in front for doors to swing and space under the eaves going to waste; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Fitted wardrobes across NW1W: local notes

Many older bedrooms across NW1W keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.

About 40% of the homes in the NW1W postcode district went up before 1919, and about 20% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 40% of homes in NW1W were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 75% of households in the NW1W postcode district live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.

St Pancras: For an older house near Lumen United Reformed Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us at the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Pricing fitted wardrobes in NW1W

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions we’re often asked

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in NW1W?

Yes, we do. We work in NW1W and across Camden.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
