Alcove units in Fitzrovia

Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, depending on the look you want. The plinth height can match the skirting for a tidy line around the room. These details are settled when we visit, before anything is made. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast and tired cupboards in the alcoves; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Fitzrovia, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan room. Either way, alcove units are made for the room as it is.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Living-room storage in Fitzrovia

In the area around Fitzrovia, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 38%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Fitzrovia, 25 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. For fitting in Fitzrovia, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Close to St Anne's Churchyard? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For a flat near London Euston station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How fitting works for alcove units

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, and we find a time for the design visit.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that is what you chose.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With bought furniture you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you pick, either spray painted in the workshop or hand painted. They can match the walls, the woodwork or neither. Standard furniture does not allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, leaving gaps or blocking access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

What prompts alcove units in Fitzrovia

Often the alcoves are simply the biggest unused space in the room. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, leaving gaps at the sides and above. A fitted unit fills the recess.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Shelving for books and records
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast

If you live in a period home close to Whitefield's Tabernacle, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make alcove units for a home in Fitzrovia?

Yes, Fitzrovia is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near London Euston station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do both alcove units have to match?

That’s your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, such as the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
