Built-in bookshelves for your home in Euston

How we make built-in bookshelves for Euston

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling. For a home in Euston, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for a record collection and bookshelves in keeping with an older house.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Euston, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan room. Built-in bookshelves are designed for whichever you have.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Does a conservation area in or near Euston affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Euston. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Built-in living-room furniture in Euston

Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the streets around Euston, with about 21% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Euston, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Pancras (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Holy Trinity Church (Grade I), about 0.5 miles west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 78% of households in the streets around Euston, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live in a period home close to St Pancras New Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near London Euston station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Euston

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Approximate measurements of the space

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Why bespoke in Euston?

Bespoke is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Advice

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Euston?

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A room lined with books feels different.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy

For a family home near UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How parking will work on your street
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast
  • Decorating the rest of the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
