Alcove units in Grange Park
Alcove units for homes in Grange Park
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you. If your home has everyday clutter left on show and empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast, alcove units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Grange Park, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, alcove units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it our choice for doors and visible panels. It’s a good match for alcoves on an external wall.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is also good for drawer boxes because it stands up to daily use. The edge can be painted or shown as a detail.
What happens on fitting day
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You let us know which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
- At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
- We send a written quote setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- Once you are happy, the units are made in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Empty the space we will be working in
Starting with a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
- Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
- Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
- Note the sizes of large things you want to store
Do not let stored things block the chimney breast vent. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry, which protects the units too.
Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for.
Living-room storage in Grange Park
In the neighbourhood around Grange Park, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Grange Park include Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Enfield are set locally. Where a street in Grange Park is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Grange Park station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Enfield Town Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. Forty Hall, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Grange Park is about 3 miles south-east of Edmonton, part of the London Borough of Enfield. Homes in Grange Park are part of the area we cover for alcove units, as part of our work in every London borough. We list Grange Park among 26 places we cover in Enfield.
Here we cover the EN2, N21 and N14 postcode area for alcove units. If your home is on a street like Viga Road, Maxim Road and Vera Avenue, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for alcove units. We also cover the places around Grange Park: World's End (1 mile south-west), Oakwood (1 mile west), Osidge (2 miles south-west), Southgate (2 miles south-west) and Botany Bay (2 miles north-west). Around Grange Park
Our area takes in the homes around Grange Park Preparatory School, Highlands School and The Old Wheatsheaf pub and the streets around them. Grange Park’s nearest station is Grange Park station, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre. Nearby you will also find St Michaels Hospital (1.2 miles north-east) and Museum of Enfield (1 mile east).
What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How square the room is
- The internal fittings
- How big the furniture is
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Your postcode and the borough
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Your questions about alcove units in Grange Park
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Grange Park station?
Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do both alcove units have to match?
It is entirely your choice. Alcoves are often different widths anyway. They can match in style while doing different jobs.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what to expect before we arrive.
How do I get a quote for alcove units in Grange Park?
Just tell us about the room on our contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.
How tall should alcove units be?
That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice. The height is settled at the measuring visit.
When is bespoke worth it?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
