How we make fitted wardrobes for N14
Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. That leaves no gap above to gather dust and no wasted space at the sides. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in N14, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall.
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
What goes into your quote
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Getting a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Around Southgate
Our area takes in the homes around Grovelands Park, Christ Church Southgate Parish Church and The New Crown pub. Other local landmarks include Ashmole Primary School (a few minutes’ walk north-west), Salcombe School (0.8 miles north) and Ashmole Academy (close by, under half a mile north). The nearest railway station is New Southgate station, roughly 1 mile south-west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Greentrees Hospital (1.9 miles south-east) and Broomfield House Museum (1 mile south-east). For a walk, there’s Barfield Allotments Nature Park.
Fitted wardrobes for homes across N14
Homes across N14, Southgate, New Southgate and Arnos Grove among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.
About 44% of the homes in the N14 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 44% of homes in the N14 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 47% of households in N14 live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both during the design visit.
Southgate: If you live in a period home close to Christ Church Southgate Parish Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Essex House and Arnoside House, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Southgate, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the paint.
Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can. Opening a window now and then helps.
Honest limits
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
Is bespoke worth it?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop, since there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Boards, parts and paint
Hanging rails
We keep the top rail at a height you can reach. Shelves above the rails hold things used less often.
Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in N14
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Where is the furniture made?
We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.
Do you cover N14?
Yes. N14 is part of the area we cover. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
