Fitted wardrobes across N21: what to expect
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Bedroom storage across N21
We make fitted wardrobes for homes across N21, in Southgate, Enfield Chase and Winchmore Hill and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it’s made of.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 40% of the housing in N21, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 40% of homes in the N21 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 44% of households in the N21 postcode district, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
N21 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Winchmore Hill: If you live near Grovelands Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
Practical tips
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Let us know which walls face outside
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care and don’t scrub the surfaces.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.
Questions we are often asked
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
