Alcove Units in Botany Bay

Planning alcove units for a home in Botany Bay? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Room to work in an alcove
  • Clutter with nowhere to go

Need alcove units in Botany Bay?

Alcove units in Botany Bay: what you get

An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. People typically come to us about space for a growing book collection and a place for a small desk; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. Some have alcoves either side of a chimney breast, some a bay window, and some neither. The design for your home in Botany Bay starts from its own walls, with shelves sized so they do not sag.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
  • Sort out damp patches before fitting

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, treat the units gently: lift things onto the shelves rather than sliding them, and do not scrub the surfaces.

Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Overloaded shelves are the main cause of sagging, so mention heavy collections when we plan the unit.

Questions from Botany Bay

Does a conservation area in or near Botany Bay affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Crews Hill station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

That’s a job for your electrician. It is best done before the units go in. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How tall should alcove units be?

It’s up to you. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while others stop them at the picture rail or leave open shelves above a low cupboard. We will go through what suits your room when we visit.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you, with a way planned for cables to reach the sockets.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What affects the price in Botany Bay

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so alcove units arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level. Then we go through the design together.
  3. We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Built-in living-room furniture in Botany Bay

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Botany Bay were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Botany Bay, Historic England’s list includes Holly Hill Farmhouse (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 52% of households in the area around Botany Bay, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Close to Trent Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. The wider area includes historic houses like Forty Hall, about 2.5 miles east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to St. John's Senior School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

How it’s made

Shelves

Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up, and it suits a period room.
