Planning fitted furniture in HA1?

How we make fitted wardrobes for HA1

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, keeping rails at a height they can reach. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and too little room for clothes.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

How our quotes work

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Homes across HA1 and their bedrooms

In HA1, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. The design can help one room work two ways.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 42% of the housing in the HA1 postcode district, with about 23% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 42% of homes in HA1 date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. 13 of the 13 places in HA1 with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in HA1 ahead of fitting day.

Greenhill: Close to Northwick Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Granada Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

An tricky room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and touch-ups are straightforward.

Is bespoke worth it?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking and unloading on your street

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

What to send when you get in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in HA1

How do I get started?

The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
