Alcove Units in Honor Oak

Thinking about alcove units in Honor Oak? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture

Alcove units designed for your room

Alcove units for homes in Honor Oak

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, depending on the look you want. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy line around the room. These details are settled when we visit. If your home has a desk that tucks into an alcove and units that sit well with original features, alcove units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Honor Oak built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Honor Oak Park station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

My house in Honor Oak is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Do you move sockets for alcove units?

Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. It is best done before the units go in, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. We agree the height at the measuring visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels

Why bespoke in Honor Oak?

Bespoke furniture is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and making time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Honor Oak homes and alcove units

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Honor Oak went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Honor Oak. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the streets around Honor Oak, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.
