Loft Storage in Honor Oak

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in Honor Oak, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
  • Unused space in a dormer

How we make loft storage for Honor Oak

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there is often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. At the design visit in Honor Oak, we’ll see what fits. If your home has needing storage in a loft office and wasted space behind the knee walls, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around Honor Oak were built before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That is where fitted storage comes in, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What prompts loft storage in Honor Oak

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom

Close to Peckham Rye? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Questions from Honor Oak

Do you cover homes near Honor Oak Park station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Honor Oak is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not when it is planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the measuring visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Drawers in the knee wall normally involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the design visit.

What loft storage can’t fix

Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Loft conversions, which we don’t carry out
  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, use our contact form and tell us.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Loft storage in Honor Oak: local notes

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Honor Oak went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 25 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Honor Oak. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Honor Oak needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Pricing loft storage in Honor Oak

What you pay depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
