Our fitted wardrobes across SE4
Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. Most enquiries start with dusty space on top of the wardrobe and wasted space beside the chimney breast; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.
What goes into your quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Local landmarks in Telegraph Hill
Our area takes in the homes around Fordham Park, St Catherine's Hatcham and Haberdashers' Hatcham College and the streets around them. Telegraph Hill has its own railway station: Brockley station. Other landmarks nearby include Southwark Adult Education Institute (0.6 miles north-west) and Lewisham Shopping Centre (1.4 miles east). Not far away are New Cross Gate Cutting.
Homes across SE4 and their bedrooms
If your bedroom in SE4 has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. Where there isn’t one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.
About 49% of the homes in SE4 went up before 1919, and about 15% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 49% of homes in SE4 were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. About 24% of households in SE4 live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in SE4 are well within our area. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Telegraph Hill: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Southwark Adult Education Institute, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Brockley station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before and after fitting day
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.
Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, ready to assemble in the room.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
Flat-pack or bespoke?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
What it is made from
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in SE4
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.
Do you work in SE4?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes SE4.
How do I get a quote?
Just send us a few details through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.
