Our fitted wardrobes across SE23

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. Typical reasons to get in touch are wardrobes that are full to bursting and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

What affects the price in SE23

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Bedroom storage across SE23

SE23 has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the SE23 postcode district, with about 21% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in SE23 (about 42%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. 2 of the 11 places in SE23 with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in SE23, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.

Perry Vale: The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near Forest Hill station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That is a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. The colour is agreed with you.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there is room to open them, hinged doors give full access. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
