About our alcove units in Hyde Park Estate
We work across London, including Hyde Park Estate. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you’re happy the units are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. People usually come to us about room to work in an alcove and everyday clutter left on show; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Hyde Park Estate, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Alcove units are designed for whichever you have.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the alcove unit we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What it’s made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing means trimming the edges on site so they follow the wall. This closes the gap between a straight unit and a bowed alcove.
Shelves
We set shelf spacing around what you own so tall books and records have room. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.
Pricing alcove units in Hyde Park Estate
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The number of doors and drawers
- The internal fittings
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
Getting in touch
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- How you want to use the space
- Your postcode and the borough

Questions from Hyde Park Estate
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hyde Park Estate?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Can you make alcove units for a home in Hyde Park Estate?
Yes, Hyde Park Estate is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
What affects the price of alcove units?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The units are made at our workshop first, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.

Fitting day, step by step
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room. It is useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
- We then send a quote in writing for the units.
- The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Empty the space we’ll be working in

Alcove units in Hyde Park Estate: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hyde Park Estate were built before 1919 (about 42%) and since 2000 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 18 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Hyde Park Estate. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, about 0.5 miles north-east of the centre of Hyde Park Estate, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
