How we price wall beds

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Wall beds in Hyde Park Estate: what you get

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. If your home has somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. With most households around Hyde Park Estate in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Higher cupboards are best for things you use less often.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

Is bespoke worth it?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

FAQs: wall beds in Hyde Park Estate

I live in a flat in Hyde Park Estate. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hyde Park Estate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

What does a wall bed cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve seen the room. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Why people ask for wall beds in Hyde Park Estate

Some want a room that can change as the family does. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors without giving up the floor.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A storage wall with a bed inside

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so let us know about bays, permits or any loading area during the design visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
