Alcove Units in Mile End
For homes in Mile End, we make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Each piece is finished by spray or by hand, in the colour you choose.
- Alcoves that are wasted space
- Furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove
- Bowed walls and sloping floors

Mile End homes and alcove units
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Mile End were built since 2000 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Mile End include Phoenix School (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St Paul (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Mile End, let us know at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
If you live near Mile End Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a family home near Beatrice Tate School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Mile End is about 2 miles west of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Design visits and fitting in Mile End can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets, large and small.
Here we cover the E3, E1 and E14 postcode area for alcove units. Whether you live on a street like Bow Road, Bale Road and Toby Lane or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for alcove units. Mile End is near the A1205; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Bow (1 mile north), Bow Common (1 mile south-east), Bromley (1 mile east), Limehouse (1 mile south) and Donnybrook Quarter (1 mile north). Across the rest of Tower Hamlets, our area takes in Whitechapel (2 miles west), Spitalfields (2 miles west), Tower Hill (2 miles south-west), St George in the East (2 miles south-west), Wapping (2 miles south-west) and Isle of Dogs (3 miles south).
Around Mile End
The streets we cover here include those near Malmesbury Primary School and Lord Tredegar Public House. For rail, the closest station is Limehouse station, about 0.9 miles south. Other landmarks nearby include Westfield Stratford City (1.7 miles north-east) and St Clement's Hospital (under half a mile north-east). Not far away are Old Ford Island.
Alcove units in Mile End
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, and leave a route for cables to reach the sockets. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess.
A large number of homes around Mile End date from 2000 onwards, and in a newer home the living space is normally open-plan, without a chimney breast. That means alcove units often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How we price alcove units
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How square the room is
- Parking near your home
- The internal fittings
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What we need to know
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- How you want to use the space
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Your questions about alcove units in Mile End
Is Mile End in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Mile End is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
I live near Limehouse station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. The height is settled during the design visit.
What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?
We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there’s damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Why people ask for alcove units in Mile End
A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor, which helps in a small bedroom.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Alcoves that aren’t square
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
- Worn or badly fitted alcove units
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
If you live in a flat close to Limehouse station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- A written quote that sets out the job
Tips worth knowing
These points come up often when people plan alcove units. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
- Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Sort out damp patches before fitting
- Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, go gently with the new paintwork, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.
Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose, and adjust any door that starts to catch.
How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
- We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- Once you are happy, the units are built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
- We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Getting a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
What it is made from
Shelves
How thick a shelf needs to be depends on how wide the alcove is and what it holds. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.
Plinths and scribe strips
Most alcoves need scribing on both sides and sometimes at the top. It’s the difference between a unit that sits in the alcove and one that belongs there.
