Fitted wardrobes in E14: how it works

Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Quotes in E14

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What’s near Bow Common

Around Bow Common, we cover homes near Langdon Park Secondary School, Bartlett Park and The Widow's Son pub and the streets around them. Bow Common’s nearest station is Limehouse station, roughly 0.8 miles south-west. Well-known places in the area include Museum of the Book (0.5 miles south-west) and St Clement's Hospital (0.6 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Lavender Pond.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across E14

Many older bedrooms across E14 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

In the E14 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 56%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than half of the homes in the E14 postcode district (about 56%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 83% of households in the E14 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, E14 included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.

Bow Common: Near listed buildings like Church of St Anne, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre of Bow Common, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near Stebon Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.

Doors and drawer fronts

Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there’s nowhere for dust to collect on top.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Where they’ll park and unload

How we price fitted wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions from E14

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Where is the furniture made?

It is built in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We do not plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.
