About fitted wardrobes in E1
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and no space in front for doors to swing.
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.
How our quotes work
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Why work with us
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Every quote follows a design visit
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Homes across E1 and their bedrooms
Many older bedrooms across E1 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.
Homes built since 2000 make up about 40% of the housing in E1, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in the E1 postcode district (about 40%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. Purpose-built flats are home to about 80% of households in E1, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in E1, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Shoreditch: Close to Artillery Ground? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Mansion House, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, for plain or panelled doors alike.
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Where other trades come in
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop, since there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.
What to check before you book
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How parking will work on your street
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
After a loft conversion, the new bedroom usually needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, keeping the room clear.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
Questions we’re often asked
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
