What alcove units can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors

Alcove units in Wapping: what you get

An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It gives you a place to work without turning a room into an office. We plan the desk height and depth with you, and leave a route for cables to reach the sockets. Typical reasons to get in touch are cupboards in keeping with an older house and tired cupboards in the alcoves; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many homes around Wapping were built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. Alcove units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the price in Wapping

Several things affect the price:

  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Living-room carpentry in Wapping: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the streets around Wapping went up since 2000, and about 29% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Wapping, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Peter (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St George in the East (Grade I), under half a mile north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Purpose-built flats are home to about 80% of households in the neighbourhood around Wapping, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live near William Curtis Ecological Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a flat close to Wapping station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Why people ask for alcove units in Wapping

Others want a proper home for books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with shelf heights and depths to suit.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Alcoves that aren’t square
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • A place for a small desk

The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 1.3 miles west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How fitting works for alcove units

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it is useful to sort them out in advance. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We build the units in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wapping?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Wapping affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How tall should alcove units be?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. We agree the height at the design visit.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do you move sockets for alcove units?

That’s a job for your electrician. It is best done before the units go in so the sockets line up with the design. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
