Wall beds in Northwood, Hillingdon

Thinking about wall beds in Northwood? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A storage wall with a bed inside

Wall beds designed for your room

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and usually cost less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Wall beds for homes in Northwood

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it is time to sleep. It lets one room do two jobs, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a flexible room for a growing family and a home office that also sleeps guests.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Northwood, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That’s where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

The problems wall beds solve

Sofa beds aren’t always comfortable for regular use. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed

If you live in a flat close to Carpenders Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Northwood

About 37% of the homes in the area around Northwood went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Northwood, Historic England’s list includes Lodge to Admiralty House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east, and Upland Court (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Hillingdon is no exception. If your road in Northwood falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Emmanuel Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to King George V Playing Fields? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Your questions about wall beds in Northwood

Is parking a problem for fitting in Northwood?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Northwood affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That depends on the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
