Ask about alcove units in Poplar
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Alcove units for homes in Poplar
In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that sit as part of the room. Where a room in Poplar has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one, starting with a design visit to measure. Most enquiries start with walls too uneven for standard furniture and somewhere to keep books and records; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Most internal walls in homes from recent decades are plasterboard on studs, and the board alone isn’t meant for heavy loads. Around Poplar, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how alcove units are fixed: tall units stand on the floor and are tied into the studs, and shelves use fixings made for the board where there is no stud.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What alcove units cannot fix
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
- Finding and fixing the cause of damp
- Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace

Shelves
How thick a shelf needs to be depends on how wide the alcove is and what it holds. For a wide span or heavy books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip on the front or a support.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the units arrive already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully once fitted.
Alcove units for homes in Poplar
In the area around Poplar, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Poplar, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and New City College (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than half of the homes in the streets around Poplar (about 66%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes usually have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so alcove units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
For a flat near Canary Wharf station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.9 miles south. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Poplar is about 2 miles west of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We design and make alcove units for homes in Poplar and the rest of Tower Hamlets, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
In E14, SE16 and E22, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Market Way, Castor Lane and Dockyard Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for alcove units. Poplar is near the A102 and A1261; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. We also cover London Docklands (1 mile south), Canary Wharf (1 mile south-west), Heron Quays (1 mile south-west), Coldharbour (1 mile south-east) and Blackwall (1 mile east). We also make alcove units in nearby places such as Whitechapel (2 miles west), Spitalfields (3 miles west), Tower Hill (3 miles west), Bethnal Green (2 miles north-west), Cambridge Heath (3 miles north-west) and Stepney (2 miles north-west).

Why people ask for alcove units in Poplar
Some homes already have alcove cupboards, but they’ve seen better days. New units are a chance to rethink how the space works.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Room to work in an alcove
- Shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess
- Somewhere to keep books and records
- Tired cupboards in the alcoves
For families living near Tower Hamlets College, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Before you choose who makes it
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
Your questions about alcove units in Poplar
Does a conservation area in or near Poplar affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Canary Wharf station?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What affects the price of alcove units?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Should both alcoves have the same units?
That’s your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but many people put a desk or a TV in one alcove and cupboards in the other. Shared details, such as the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
Is it possible to have a desk built into one alcove?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
